Everything I learned, I learned...
By: Clarine Eickhoff
I am excited to hear of the new school and business partnership Dr. Hanson is spearheading and I have been reminiscing about my own high school career. This Summer marks my 20 year anniversary for joining the workforce. My aunt and uncle just built their restaurant in 1995 so I eagerly jumped on the opportunity to work for them. I have a strong belief that every high school student should be employed as wait staff before they graduate high school.
Working on the other side of the table can be life altering. In addition to years of waiting tables, bartending, insurance sales, marketing consulting, and management, I have been a business partner with my husband as co-heart in Eickhoff Construction, LLC. Employees, taxes, long hours, debt, flexible schedule, pride in your work, ownership; you always wonder if the pros out weigh the cons. It is amazing what knowledge you gain from owning your own business as well as experiencing more than one career.
Business isn't just business. It is personal. And no matter what you do and how you approach things you are usually wrong in someone's eyes. So you just work to make sure you can sleep at night and most of the time if you can sleep at night, then you are doing the right thing. Under Chamber/DEVCO, every day we try to balance what is good for one and what is good for all. Not an easy task. This is as prominent with the Chamber as with the battles of property management and leasing for the mall in my last 14 years of mall employment.
I joined the Chamber to try to influence others to think differently regarding how all of our systems work together, to provide a stronger link between the Visitor Center and the Chamber through my Visitor Center board position, and to assist in growing North Platte through the organization's economic development efforts. The recent housing effort is an example of what can happen when a board has a vision and all work in the same direction. Some did not fully agree with all the details but they followed and allowed others to lead. Everything that will be accomplished in the area of housing is within the Chamber/DEVCO mission to assist in business development in North Platte and our area and is a solution to some of our memberships concerns.
I am the product where "Everything I learned, I learned . . . waiting tables." Listen to your customer, try to know what they need before they know, and your drive and attitude can put more dollars in your pocket. My Aunt once told me when I was trying to determine my direction after high school that I should be in business consulting. This is close enough.
